A couple more email updates to share with you.

21/10/2010:
We have 5 woman doctors on this trip and only 2 travelling together. Nine Aussies, 4 Irish, several English and 2 Yanks and we all finished the biking part today. In the first kilometre, one guy had a puncture and we had 2 more for the whole trip. In the last kilometer today, one of the Irish doctors took a big fall on some large gravel and took a huge chunk out of her arm and had to go to hospital. Talk about lousy luck and I suppose it didn’t help that we were all hooning and racing like mad over the last few kilometres which wasn’t wise and courted disaster. Shite for brains, all of us.

We only had two other falls, one of the Americans had to spend a day in the bus and MP had a big fall too which I witnessed from behind and it was frightening. We were riding over a long bridge on tiles for a footpath and there was a ramp off the end covered in loose stones and she just hit the brakes at the wrong time and flew through the air and I swore her trip was over. It looked terrible from behind but she was very lucky how she fell and only came away with some small cuts and bruises and was able to get on the bike immediately and was ok again by the next day. One lucky girl. It even crossed my mind to take a photo but thought my life was too precious. The way the rest of the team came to her aid was fantastic.

It’s been a great trip and we’re all tired and looking forward to the leisurely part of the trip. We lose Wayne from Adelaide tomorrow as he was only on for part of this trip which is a shame as he is one great character and worth a blog entry on his own. This guy is such an Ocker he makes Paul Hogan look like an old Etonian! He is 12 days older than me and cycled the whole trip in bluey singlet and sandals and joked away all day long.

Better go as dinner beckons. Bloody Chinese tucker again! Only kidding. Been great meals but Chinese for breakfast, lunch and dinner is a bit much.

Cheers from DB and MP.

We’re in Xi’an at the moment and heading to Beijing by train tonight. Zi’an is the home of the Terracotta Warriors and an amazing sight and all the work of a couple of farmers digging a well in the 1970’s. One more ticked off the bucket list.

We’ve just got back from riding 14k around the city walls and most enjoyable. It started to spit rain which is the first we have encountered for the trip but not coming to much. This city of 9 million is very modern and our hotel is next to the Louis Vuitton and Prada shops so we aren’t slumming it and Linda has refrained from shopping in those establishments. Of course, the flea markets just down the road in the Muslim Quarter were more to her liking.

I can tell you we have become experts with chop sticks.

Catch you at the weekend if you don’t hear from us again.
