Trumped

For some time now, we’ve been thinking of buying a small tent trailer instead of just tenting it like we did along the Glenelg River recently.

We saw some along the outskirts of Geelong so went in on Monday but stumbled into the wrong place where Jayco Caravans promptly sold us a Jayco Flite pop up camper trailer.

You just park this thing, wind up the roof and put the jug on.  After years of arse to the ground camping, this thing is pure luxury.  Here is an example.  We don’t get it until August which is better anyway since the weather will be on the improve by then.

Our Ford Focus towing capacity is rated at 900 kilo and the Flite weights in at 800 kilo with some basic stuff on-board.  We got back to the car and thought maybe a bigger car might be in order so we whipped over to Rex Gorell Ford, had a quick test drive of a Ford Mondeo TDCi Turbo Diesel, and bought one.

The Mondeo can haul 1600 kilo and is fitted out with every mod con imaginable.  In fact, I still don’t know what half the buttons on the console do!

We got home and were just about to call MPS and tell her about our big purchase when she rang and excitedly told us she had just bought a new house.

My flush beats your four of a kind!

Hehehe, I just love caravan 1960/70’s decor. I think they missed a decimal point or two 40 years ago and have been 100x overstocked on curtains/vinyl/chipboard etc since then.

Thomas – The new ones are a bit more chic. That’s about the only photo of the inside that I could come up with.

Well you are sure doing your bit for our economy! It is all most exciting, tell me was it the drivers knee bag or the 8 speakers that attracted you to the vehicle? It all sounds fantastic
I ordered a Jayco pop top around 33 years ago, and twice, after waiting weeks for it to be made, I arrived down from the bush to pick it up, only to find my order had been sold to someone who had arrived earlier that day and obviously offered extra money to jump the queue! After being mucked around over quite some time, I told them to stick it and went and bought something else!

Yes, Kevin would be very proud of us. Might be an OA in store for us this year. I hope we don’t get mucked around like that as we’ve heard a similar story but more recent.

Congrats you two,now you can really travel. Why the wait though? I could buy a dozen used or new and have them in the driveway tomorrow.Diesel here is very expensive, more than gas per gallon, is it cheaper in Oz? That is one beautiful car!

June – No idea why it takes so long to get one. No rush though as winter is upon us and we’re getting soft in our old age. Diesel is about 8 cents a litre cheaper than unleaded at the moment but its not always like that. However, the fuel economy is far better than a petrol vehicle.

Wow! Two new toys at once. Are SUV’s popular down under? In Arizona everybody drives an SUV or a pickup truck, or so it seems. When we pull up to an intersection there are always three SUV’s to one economy car. It doesn’t matter how high gas gets, everybody wants a big vehicle here.

AZ – SUV’s, or Toorak Tractors as we call them here are quite popular but pickup trucks aren’t as popular as in your country although Ford sell this type. Utility vehicles, or utes, are an Aussie flavour of smaller pickup.

Congrats on the new trailer tent. We all get to the point where comfort wins over. I hope you have many many years of enjoyment out of your new purchases! I hope your partner’s sister (YPS?) has no problems with the purchase of the new house!! It is hard on a relationship when you are dying to tell your good news and they’ve got better good news. What can you do?

Peggy – MPS is a generic term and can be used either way. She has her own personal financial advisor now so things should go smoothly. 🙂

We’ve got one of those tent thingies in our family. My sister got it for cheap in a deal she made years back. Now I think it is parked at Pops’ house.

Sis showed up here two years back towing hers but she had lost the thingy that raises it in the air.

I made something out of part of a hydraulic house pump and a pair of vice grips that worked…

NOTICE_ Don’t drive those things around open! Even a short distance!

Scott – Thanks for the advice. I should have called this post “The Thingy”

WELL I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT YOU HAD SHORT ARMS AND LONG POCKETS, NOT SUCH A BAD THING THOUGH. YOU WONT EVEN NEED A SLEEPING BAG!!

Phil me old mate! Good to hear from you. Even if it a disparaging comment! 🙂 So you still read my waffle.

It’s amazing how softer we get as we get older. Now if the stockmarket really improves, we’ll be 5 Star and get a butler for good measure.

I’ll drop in for a chat within the week and no idle words this time. You can shout me a coffee out of the company vending machine.

I hope the new “thingy” has a couple of spare beds for when we visit! We don’t take up much room you know 😉

MM – No problems. We’ll be able to fit you in. You Muppet and Sammy can sleep on the 2nd bed!

Wow – very flash indeed! I hope this new rig will be coming for a trip along the Hamilton Highway for a farm stay!
Jack is walking now, can even stand up without holding onto anything. He will be able to take you for a walk around the place 🙂

Loz – Good to hear from you. I’m sure the first test run will be the “farm stay”. So young Jack is still with you! I thought he was up for sale 🙂 Any chance you could send us that photo? Mum sent it via the mobile but it wouldn’t come through for us.
